Our professional technicians enjoy working on custom projects such as this custom built home. The entire home has infloor heating on the main floor as well as throughout the basement and even in the garage. The showers are gorgeous with body jets and rain shower heads. The kitchen is a cooks dream. As the plumbers on site our men installed all fixtures in the kitchen, laundry room and bathroom's.

The home is not complete yet, however once it is the owners have ever so graciously allowed for me to come back and take photos of the rest of the bathroom's and the complete kitchen for fixtures we did install.

Government of Canada Takes Action to Improve Energy Efficiency

OTTAWA, ONTARIO, Jan 29, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, today announced additional funding of $117 million over three years for the ecoENERGY Efficiency Initiatives. These initiatives will benefit Canadians directly by improving energy efficiency through Canada's building codes, new housing standards, industrial practices, vehicle labels and consumer appliances.
"This investment demonstrates our continuing commitment to advance clean energy technologies and make Canada a world leader in energy efficiency," said Minister Oliver. "Improving energy efficiency saves energy, creates jobs and increases energy security."
This new investment is in addition to an initial $78-million investment announced by Minister Oliver last September, bringing the five-year total for the initiatives to $195 million.
Minister Oliver also announced that the ecoENERGY Retrofit - Homes program has successfully reached its goal of 250,000 registered homeowners. As planned, the program is no longer accepting new registrations.
To help ensure registered homeowners have time to get their post-retrofit evaluations and receive a grant, the Government of Canada is extending the deadline to June 30, 2012, for homeowners to complete post-retrofit evaluations and apply for a grant. All retrofit renovations must still be completed by March 31, 2012.
After launching the ecoENERGY Retrofit - Homes program in 2007, the Government of Canada renewed the program in June 2011 with an investment of $400 million through the Next Phase of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
"The decision to provide time-limited funding demonstrates prudent management by our Government to ensure that we can return to balanced budgets during this time of fiscal constraint," said Minister Oliver.

Simple Steps To Keep Heating Costs Low

As we move from cool fall days into the winter months, you don’t have to spend a fortune on heating to keep warm! Explore ways to save with our top ten tips for a toastier home—minus the high price tag.

1. Schedule an HVAC professional to clean your home’s ducts before it’s time to turn on the furnace. Your system’s efficiency can be reduced by as much as 20% by damaged or blocked ducts.

2. Inspect your home for drafts flowing in from outside. Seal any leaks with insulation, caulking or weather stripping, and you can save up to 10% off heating and cooling costs.

3. Set your thermostat to 68°F while you’re at home, and as low as 60°F when you’re awake or asleep. For each degree the heat is lowered for at least eight hours, you’ll save as much as two percent on your heating bill.

4. Install a programmable thermostat to automatically reduce the temperature in your home while you’re at work. This simple step can reduce heating costs between 5 to 15 percent a year, depending on your climate.

5. Moisturize indoor air. The more humid the air, the warmer you feel. Adding humidity to dry, heated air in the winter helps you stay comfortable at a lower thermostat setting.

6. Change your filter once a month. Dirty filters require your home heating system to work harder, which equates to higher costs on your heating bill.

7. Upgrade your HVAC. An inefficient system can waste hundreds of dollars each year. Install a high-efficiency furnace like the SLP98V Variable-Capacity Gas Furnace from Lennox to reduce your bill dramatically.

8. Welcome sunny winter days. Opening curtains and blinds on sunny days can help to warm your home, especially on south-facing sides. Close curtains at night to reduce heat loss.

General guidelines for keeping your home warm and efficient:

Have a qualified HVAC professional inspect your home’s ducts and cooling equipment.

Set your thermostat to 68°F when you’re at home and awake, and as low as 60°F when you’re asleep or awake.

Clean or replace furnace filters every month.

Clean chimney and check to see if your fireplace is working properly.

Seal air leaks in the attic, basement and crawlspace, and also around windows and doors.

Insulate inside of windows with heavy-duty, clear plastic sheets.

Check your attic for proper insulation.

Close curtains or shades at night and keep them open during the day

Clean windows on the south side of your house to maximize sunlight exposure.

Weather-strip doors that lead to cold or outside areas.

Wrap and insulate waterlines to prevent them from freezing.

Repair leaky faucets.

Extra steps you can take to save energy:

Install a programmable thermostat, so you can preset temperatures for different times of the day.

Insulate the water tank and first six feet of hot and cold water pipes connected to the unit.

Lower the temperature of your water heater to 120°F (for every 10-degree decrease in temperature, you may save 3% - 5% on your energy costs).

Install rubber gaskets behind outlets and use switch plates on exterior walls.

Install low-flow showerheads.

Things you can do to improve air quality and reduce potential health risks:

When adjusting clocks, change batteries in smoke alarms, as well as radon and carbon monoxide detectors.

Consider a ventilation system to increase air circulation inside and add a healthy dose of fresh air.

Clean water-damaged carpets and materials, or consider replacement.
Reduce the potential for buildup of allergy-causing pollutants by keeping your house clean

Take special precaution when operating fuel-burning appliances to avoid leakage.

Store and dispose of household chemicals in a safe manner.

There’s a new law in Ontario to protect consumers from misleading sales of natural gas or electricity contracts.

The Ontario Energy Board audited 12 companies last month. It found all had failed to comply with the rules in some ways, such as not training agents properly or not mentioning a customer’s cancellation rights in a contract.

Nine companies have agreed to pay fines totalling $212,500, the board said this week. Two companies (Summitt Energy and Energhx Green Energy) have asked for a hearing. One case (MxEnergy) is still outstanding.

Now here’s the bad news. Many companies use the same abusive practices to persuade people to replace their water heaters.

Here’s a story that makes my blood boil, involving a vulnerable senior and a water heater replacement that leaked all over his basement.

A salesman went to the Toronto home of Jose Martins, 87, and said his seven-year-old water heater would be replaced under a government program to get rid of inefficient tanks. The switch took place within minutes.

MorEnergy was a competitor of the company from which he rented his water heater. But Martins, who didn’t speak English well, didn’t know that.

“He said his water heater wasn’t giving him any problems,” says daughter Laura Martins, “but by the end of the persistent and deceptive sales pitch, my dad had given him his gas bill and signed the rental agreement.”

The new tank started leaking a few days after installation. By the time Laura reached MorEnergy (since the office was closed), the carpet was ruined.

“I wanted to cancel the agreement and have the tank removed. The company told me it would cost $300.”

Yes, that’s right. MorEnergy installed the water heater during the 10-day cooling off period provided for sales over $50 made in a customer’s home — and insisted on a $300 fee to cancel during the cooling off period.

The Ontario consumer services ministry has received 1,700 complaints and inquiries about water heaters this year.

The 10-day cooling off period for door to door sales is absolute, says spokesman Stephen Puddister.

A supplier that pushes you to install a tank in a hurry can be seen as trying to deny your right to “cool off” under the consumer protection act.

And if a supplier wants to charge a penalty to remove its rented equipment when change your mind within 10 days, you don’t have to pay it.

MorEnergy president John Nassar doesn’t see things that way.

“I understand the tank was a leaker. Since we don’t manufacture the tanks, we have no control over this,” he said.

As for the $300 removal fee, “the act is clear that if customers invite us in to do the work, then they have to cover the soft costs,” he argued.

Come on, John. Many people don’t “invite” MorEnergy into their homes.

They get a sales pitch from someone who declares their tank is no good — and agree to a replacement under the impression they’re dealing with their existing supplier.

MorEnergy has agreed to pay a $40,000 fine after admitting its agents wore badges that made people think they represented a gas or electricity utility.

Sadly, the misrepresentation leading to rush replacements of water heaters falls outside the Ontario Energy Board’s jurisdiction.

I’d like to see the provincial government crack down on door-to-door sales of all products, including burglar alarms and water purifiers, because of proven abuses.

There’s an election campaign going on now. Is anyone listening?

If you thought last summer was too hot, then I’m sorry to say you’re not likely to get much relief this year. Environment Canada is predicting yet another hotter-than-normal June, July and August for Canada. So if you can’t take the heat, you’d better come up with a plan to stay cool. But beating the heat doesn’t have to mean cranking the A/C — air conditioning is really hard on your budget, not to mention the power grid. This summer, why not consider these 12 frugal tips to keep your cool in the hot

Get grilling
When it’s hot outside, using your oven or stovetop can make your house even hotter. Stop sweating in the kitchen and make use of your barbecue whenever you can. You can use the grill for everything — even pizza. If you need inspiration, check out Chatelaine’s 30 days of grilling guide.

Adjust your thermostat
Try not to leave the AC running when you’re not home. There are other ways to keep your house from heating up too much during the heat of the day (see below). Also, consider saving the air conditioning for the very hottest days of summer — and use it sparingly, turning it off when you’re sleeping, for example.

Change your filters
If you have central air, make sure you give your system a once-over and change the filters so that it runs more efficiently (and pumps clean air through your home when it’s on).

Keep the curtains closed
Keep your windows curtained or shuttered during the heat of the day — that will also help the air stay cooler when the sunshine is at its peak.

Use fans
Ceiling fans and portable fans will keep the air circulating through your home so that it stays cooler and fresher.

Cover the vents
If you are running AC, make sure you cover the vents in rooms you don’t use to push the cold air where you want it — especially at night. Covering the downstairs vents can make sure your upper floors are cool when you’re sleeping.

Camp out
Hot nights can be the hardest part of summer, so why not get out of your upstairs bedroom and sleep somewhere cooler? Set up camp in the backyard or in the basement — if you have young kids, you can also make it fun by pitching a tent and making it like a real camping trip.

Use cold showers
Bring down your body temperature before bed by taking a cold shower or bath. It will help make you more comfortable and help you get to sleep even on the hottest nights. To get super cool before bed, stand in front of a fan to dry off instead of using a towel — that gives your body an extra chill that will keep you cooler for longer.

Peg out
Your dryer makes your home even hotter, so use your clothesline instead. Pegging out can also help cut your electricity bill. And you get an added bonus — clothes dried outside smell so much better.

Get a pool (kiddie that is)
Every kid on my block had a Mr. Turtle Pool when I was growing up — kid-sized pools are a great way for your little ones to keep cool. Adults and pets can also cool their heels in the cold water when they need it. If your kids are too small to play safely in a kiddie pool, then turn on the sprinkler to cool them down.

Have lots of cold ones…
Keep yourself well hydrated with cold, icy beverages, preferably non-alcoholic — while a cold beer or two goes down very smoothly on a hot day, the alcohol can leave you dehydrated and feeling even worse.

Make homemade popsicles with the kids
Packaged popsicles and ice creams are expensive — enlist your kids in helping you make juice popsicles of their own. You can also make your own cones and drumsticks — they taste better than the ones you buy at the store.

Two Important Changes for the Eco Energy Program

The Government of Canada has renewed the ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes program. From June 6, 2011, until March 31, 2012, homeowners are eligible to receive grants of up to $5,000 to make their homes more energy-efficient. There are two important changes to the program. First, there is a requirement for participants to register directly with the program before booking their evaluation. Second, homeowners will now be required to provide receipts to their energy advisor at the time of the post-retrofit evaluation to confirm eligibility for the grant.

$1,000 Budget

With this small budget, you may need to get a bit creative to achieve your goals, but there are some easy steps that will greatly improve the look of your kitchen or bath

Kitchens:

* Countertops — To simulate the look of real (and very expensive) stone, without the cost, use ceramic tile or a higher density, more upscale tile called through-body porcelain tile. Especially for countertops, since they cover a large surface area of your kitchen, a new tile surface will add a dramatic update. However, for an even lower cost, choose a new laminate countertop to replace outdated or worn countertops for a fresh, new look.

* Faucets and Hardware — Replacing an old faucet with a newer, stylish model in an updated finish will instantly perk up a kitchen. Then, update drawer pulls and knobs to match the finish of the faucet to pull your room together.

* Cabinets — If your cabinets are paintable, a fresh coat of paint can brighten and refresh worn cabinets and give the entire room an updated look.

* Window coverings — Remove old valances and let in more natural light with simple, open window treatments. Replace old vinyl blinds with two-inch faux wood blinds. These offer an upscale look of genuine white wood blinds without the associated cost.

* Floors — New laminate flooring may be a cost-effective choice for homeowners who prefer to leave installation to the professionals. However for the adventurous DIYer, natural stone products, such as slate, are now an affordable and stylish option.

Heating Efficiency

Furnaces are rated by the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ratio, which is the percent of heat produced for every dollar of fuel consumed. AFUE works a lot like the miles-per-gallon rating on your car—the higher the rating, the lower your fuel costs.

Cooling Efficiency

The measure for the efficiency of air conditioners and heat pumps is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), which compares cooling output to electrical consumption over a range of temperatures. The higher the SEER, the less the unit will cost to operate.

The results this calculator shows you is savings in 5 years. You will see a large savings for your Heating System, the Air Conditioning Systems will not provide you with a huge savings - however it is your comfort level which is the main reason for upgrading your AC, having a more efficient system which is properly sized to your home and system will run much more efficient and if you upgrade to a more efficient system it will be quieter as well - which again is your comfort!

Waking up this morning... the Thursday before Good Friday and seeing a blanket of snow on the ground - just isn't cool! Apparently its still heating season so make sure before you leave this morning your heat is on for when you get home this evening! Save a few dollars on your heating bill by lowering your thermostat just slightly when you aren't home - even better if you have a programmable thermostat you can program it to lower during the day and increase a degree or two just before you get home!

The Way To Work-High School Students || JJ McLellan Mount Forest

This morning I had the pleasure to participate in "The Way to Work" for high school students which was presented by the CEC - Career Education Council for Guelph - Wellington - Dufferin. The purpose of this program was to give students hands on experience with meeting potential employers as well as resume, interview and networking tips. There were students from Mount Forest as well as Palmerston high schools and most who were already in a co-op course at the high school. We have had a wonderful working relationship with both the Mount Forest high school as well as the Palmerston high school with many co-op students coming from both over the years. One reason for the mentors being there was not only to represent area businesses but also to give the students an opportunity to try mock interview questions, have their resume critiqued and also practice their networking. For me it brought back some great learning experiences to how I personally have gotten to where I am now, I look back and not only was there learning experiences there was a lot of growing as a person and through education intellectually. For someone now working within a position which is within the trades, I was able to provide what we would look for... Someone looking for a future position within the trades or who is currently looking in the trades... some of these are generic to any position. Hints & Tips for Resumes, Interviews and Networking:

Make sure your name stands out on your resume - make it larger than your address and bold it.

Ensure your contact information is where you can be contacted and is professional - if you have voicemail make sure it is your name and not music etc, your email should also be your name in some form - not for example (from Emily at TG Minto used) hotstuff@hotmail.com

What job are you applying for... if you find a job posted for a company be specific and say you are applying for that specific job. Use this as your objective. If you are applying and there isn't a posting specifically put what your objective is and position you are trained for. If a company is looking for a licensed gas technician... and you do not have a licence... does it make sense to apply? No.

If you have taken a co-op class which relates to the job - this is experience - use this on your resume. If you can get a reference letter or marks from your co-op placement even better.

Any other direct experience which can relate or is transferable to the job - this is key! The trades are all about hands on just as much as it is about learning the book work in school.

Training - if you have completed any type of training this is very important! Be sure to list it on your resume - however also be prepared to show proof if asked.

Before an interview - even before you apply do your research about the company. Do not get into an interview and then ask what we do.

Speak confidently and ask questions.

Networking is very important - a lot of time, although 'what you know' is very important for any job, its also 'who you know' that is almost equally or even more important in the job search. By networking you make connections and people talk, when people talk you can almost receive more credit/reliability/respect by obtaining a job this way.

Social Networking - this is becoming huge not just for inviduals but also for businesses. One tip by Bill Nelson this morning was related to Facebook and the content posted on Facebook. Beware what you post - it will be there forever and potential employers can search online and could potentially find this information.

Some other great tips in general...

Education is very important and essential to get any kind of job.

If you are unsure what you want to do as a career, however you are going forward with post-secondary education - choose a path with transferable skills. As a personal example, I took a year off after high school and worked full time at my part time job (maternity leave position at a local car dealership as the service advisor) this provided me with great on the job experience and also helped me to realize that I should to go school for Business. I then applied for General Business at Conestoga College and was accepted, it was a two year course which I thought was perfect, get in, get out! Half way through my 2nd year I seriously debated transferring over to the Business Administration Management Studies program. One thing I will always remember my parents telling me and making very clear is that if we ever wanted to work within our family business we had to go to school - this I am so very grateful for! I switched the program and spent another year in school after which I joined our family business, as a part of the 4th generation. On the job experience is important, however formal education is just as, if not more important. Receiving a diploma, degree, certificate or trade license is incredibly valuable, something that does not cost to carry around with you and once you receive it no one can ever take it away from you, these exact points I remember being reminded of from my own family... its true!

At the end of the workshop the mentors were asked to provide one piece of advice to the students. My piece of advice to the students was... Think of what you enjoy doing, whether it is your hobbies, a part time job, sports etc. Think of the skills you use to do those. Such as for me I enjoy working with numbers, writing, working with people and being creative/artistic. All of which relate to my career!

It was a pleasure speaking with the students and applaude the Career Education Council as well as the High Schools for doing workshops like this for the students. I am sure the information learned will prove to be quite valuable in the future !

Natural Gas Water Heaters - Product Overview

Natural gas water heaters offer two distinct choices in style (storage tank and tankless) and three choices for venting (conventional, direct vent, power vent). Additionally, you may be able to combine your water heating with home heating.

Storage Tank Water Heaters
A storage tank water heater is the most common type of water heater in Canada. It consists of a gas burner and a steel cylinder storage tank with capacities ranging from 30 to 100 gallons (113 to 378 Litres).

How storage tank water heaters work:

Cold water is drawn into the bottom of the tank where it is quickly heated by a gas burner. Hot water rises to the top of the tank. As the hot water is used, it is replaced at the bottom with cold water.

The tank thermostat controls the water temperature in the tank both when it is leaving the tank to your taps and when it is on “stand by”, waiting in the tank to be used. The more efficient a water heater is the less heat is lost when the unit is on “stand by”.

Tankless Water Heater (also called On-Demand or Instantaneous Water Heaters)
A tankless water heater has no tank and stores no hot water. When hot water is needed, the water is heated on demand. When the hot water tap is turned on it triggers a flow switch that activates the burner which heats the cold water entering the tankless water heater. The water is rapidly heated to the desired temperature. This continues for as long as the hot water tap remains in the ‘on’ position. When the tap is turned ‘off’ the system shuts down resulting in substantial energy savings over units that have hot water stored in the tank on ‘stand-by’.

A tankless water heater can save space and offer flexibility being able to be installed close to the point of use.

Combination Water and Space Heating Systems
While many people have one appliance for space heating and another for water heating, you can have one natural gas appliance that heats both your water and provides heat to your home. This is called a combination system. These systems have one heat source that is shared between conventional pieces of equipment such as a tank water heater and an air handler to accomplish dual heating purposes.

Water Heating Venting 101

A natural gas water heater requires air for combustion and igniting. The air required can either come from outside or from the home itself. There are three types of venting for natural gas water heaters, each offering benefits depending on your installation limitations and requirements:

Direct Vent
A direct vent does not require a chimney, but vents through an outside wall and also brings air for combustion in from the outside. Some types of direct vent water heaters must be located close to an outside wall, while others may be located further away. Replacing

This style of venting is most often convenient when:

Replacing an electric water heater and a chimney is not available
You do not have an electrical source close to the water heater to power the vent

FACT - Neither a direct vented nor a conventional vent water heater requires electricity. If there is a power outage you will still have hot water.

Power Vent
A power vent water heater does not need a chimney, but uses an electrically powered fan to move combustion products outside.

This style of venting is used when:

Replacing an electric water heater and you do not have ready access to a chimney
You have access to a dedicated electrical receptacle within six feet of the unit

Conventional Vent
A conventional vent is required on most standard natural gas water heaters. Conventional vents can be either type B, double-wall metal vents or a tile-lined brick chimney. The conventional vent can be shared with most standard mid-efficiency furnaces or boilers. This type of vent draws the air it needs from inside your home. In airtight homes it is important that there is an adequate air supply from outside.

Nasties you’re breathing (and what to do about them)

1. Mold spores, which can be bad for both your health and your home furnishings. Mold thrives where there is too much moisture and natural fibers to feed the spores. To avoid the musty odors, window condensation and wood warping that can result from mold growth, see our online guide. Pairing a dehumidification system and air cleaner provides the best results for mold control.

2. Pet dander, which can stay airborne for hours. Use a brush to catch pets’ loose fur and bathe animals frequently. Air cleaners can also trap pet dander.

3. Unpleasant odors that can linger. Run an exhaust fan in the kitchen or bath to reduce excess humidity and odors, but don’t forget to turn it off afterwards.

4. Dust, and the irritating mites that live in it. Use a damp cloth to pick up dust instead of simply stirring up particles. Wash sheets at least once a week in hot water. Change your furnace and air conditioning filter once a month to control dust.

5. Ozone, ironically from something you use to clear the air. Many electronic particle air cleaners can actually produce ground-level ozone, a manmade pollutant that can aggravate asthma or bronchitis. Rest assured that Lennox Healthy Climate® air systems DO NOT produce harmful ozone.

6. Bacteria, some of which can cause serious illnesses. Wash fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly, and clean sink drains twice a week with an antibacterial solution. Limit unwanted moisture throughout your home.

7. Pollen, triggering asthma or hay fever symptoms. Change clothes when you come home at the end of the day, and remove your shoes when you enter the house. A HEPA air filter can help clear the air effectively.

8. Mildew, a problem with high humidity. Keep your home’s humidity levels between 30% and 60% to control mildew; run your air conditioner to help reduce unwanted moisture, and install a dehumidification system.

9. Viruses, which spread under the right conditions. The same conditions that can cause mildew to spread – poor ventilation and too much moisture in the home – should also be addressed to control the viruses that can worsen sore throats, asthma and other respiratory problems.

10. Chemical vapors that lead to headaches, dizziness and respiratory problems. Be sure to air out dry-cleaned clothes before hanging them in your closet. Also avoid using scented deodorizers, and consider a PureAir™ air purification system that cleans your home’s air better than any other single system you can buy.

•Do as much household cleaning as possible with cold water rather than hot.
•Only run full loads in the dishwasher. Use the air dry (or energy saver) option if available. Heat drying is a high energy user.
•Rinse dishes in a tub of clean water instead of under hot running water.
•Fix any leaky taps. One constant drip can waste up to 182 litre-sized bottles of water per week. If it’s a hot water tap that’s leaking, you’re sending your energy dollars down the drain.

Faucets

•Repair leaky taps, which can waste 182 litre-sized bottles of water per week.
•Ensure that taps are turned off completely.
•Replace worn-out washers.

Hot Water Heaters
After home heating, water heaters use the most energy in the home. Take advantage of the small things you can do to maximize your savings.

•Fix any leaky taps. One constant drip can waste up to 182 litre-sized bottles per week. If it's a hot water faucet that's leaking, you're sending your energy dollars down the drain.
•To save water and energy, install aerators on your kitchen faucets.
•Wrap your electric water heater with a blanket made for that purpose to help reduce heat loss.
•Insulate your hot water pipes.

Pipes

•Starting at your hot water tank, install pipe insulation around the first metre of the cold water pipe coming into the tank and the first two metres of the hot water copper pipes.
•If you have a gas-heated tank, start the pipe wrap 15cm away from exhaust vents at the top of the water heater.
•Never insulate plastic pipes.

Showerheads

•Install a low-flow showerhead to reduce the flow of water 40 to 60%.

Southgate CAO Dave Milliner says it is very important that the public is aware that these sorts of businesses sometimes use trickery to convince residents their drinking water is unsafe. The Ministry of the Environment says door-to-door water tests do not tell if water is safe to drink. More information is available from local municipalities or health units.

When you seal up any leaks with weather stripping this can save energy on your heating and less wear and tear on your furnace.
When using your clothesline or alternative to dry your clothing have your gas dryer serviced - you would be amazed at the amount of lint build up internally which could possibly cause a fire and require more energy.
You can save even more energy with your hot water heater by having it serviced regularly! Dirt, Dust and Lime build up (internally) can occur over time gradually lessening your hot water available through your tank.
With spring coming your furnace will soon be getting a well deserved break from the heating season - however do not forget about it until next heating season, ensure you call to have it cleaned and serviced so you are ready and running more efficient for when it is time to fire up the furnace again!

By removing any dust, dirt, dander etc from the ducts your reduce the amount of particles going through or getting stuck in the furnace filter.

With all this blowing snow please make sure your furnace vents are clear! If they become clogged with snow this can cause your furnace to fail and leave you with a very cold house. One thing we will ask our customers is if they have checked the vent outside - unfortunately for seniors this can be difficult, so if you have a loved one living on their own please check on them to ensure their heating system is ok!

11 minutes to a better year

It's late December and the clock is ticking away the last of 2010. Fortunately, you only need a few minutes to make 2011 easier – on your health, your home and your bank account.

In just 11 minutes, you can:

1. Set your thermostat as low as is comfortable to save energy. Every degree you raise the thermostat setting in winter can increase your heating bill three percent. So slip on a sweater and socks and set the indoor temperature two or three degrees lower.

2. Mark your calendar to change your HVAC filter regularly. Dirty filters cause your furnaceto work harder, and can be harder on your allergies, too. Changing your filter once a month – at least during summer and winter, once every three months during the shoulder seasons – is better for your health and your HVAC system.

3. Install rubber gaskets behind switch plates on exterior walls. Available from home-improvement stores, the gaskets help stop cold air from entering through electrical outlets.

4. Change a light bulb. Better yet, change out five standard incandescent bulbs for CFLs in your most frequently used fixtures. If every home did this, it would prevent the production of one trillion pounds of greenhouse gases.

5. Close the doors on your fireplace when it's not in use. Fireplaces look and feel cozy, but they are essentially an open door to the elements.

6. Check your home's air filtration systems. Unless you own an ozone-free filtration system, it may be doing your home more harm than good.

7. Take just a moment to slip off your shoes as soon as you walk in the front door to helpreduce dust and other contaminants swirling in your home. Setting out a basket with house slippers near the door encourages family and guests to do the same.

8. Replace kitchen sponges weekly. Used sponges provide the moist environment bacteria need to breed. As an alternative soak sponges in bleach 15 minutes to help kill the 100,000 bacteria inhabiting every square inch.

9. Unplug battery chargers or power adapters when they're not in use, and use a power strip as a single disconnect point. Electronics still draw a small amount of electricity even when they're turned off, and a power strip allows you to completely disconnect the power supply when units aren't in use.

10. Walk around your home to be sure furniture and draperies aren't blocking air registers. No matter how effective your heating and cooling systems are, they can't keep you comfortable if the warmed or cooled air is blocked by sofas or curtains.

11. Schedule annual maintenance on your HVAC equipment to avoid wasting energy. Locate a technician near your home by downloading the Lennox app for your iPhone™ or Android mobile device or by using the Lennox locator online.

Tips to Protect Your Family Against Carbon Monoxide and Gas Leaks

Nationally, 20-25 percent of all homes have either significant gas leaks, carbon monoxide, combustion issues, or both. This is serious stuff.

Fall is on its way out, and homeowners are taking out window screens, signing up for heating oil contracts, and putting in storm windows. One thing that should be on every list is a yearly checkup of the furnace. It’s tempting to think of this maintenance as optional, but it can be critical to ensuring a safe home environment. Mike Rogers of GreenHomes America, a company specializing in retrofitting homes to be safe, comfortable, and energy efficient, points out that, “Nationally, 20-25 percent of all homes have either significant gas leaks, carbon monoxide, combustion issues, or both. This is serious stuff.”
While an inefficient furnace degrades air quality and comfort, the most critical issue is carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas that results from inefficient combustion. Rogers notes, “Anything that burns fuel creates some CO, but a dirty, old or compromised furnace – whether it burns gas, fuel oil, kerosene, wood, or coal – can produce dangerous levels. At lower doses, CO can worsen heart conditions, cause fatigue, headache, weakness, confusion, nausea and dizziness. At higher doses, it can kill.”
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that, on average, 170 people die every year in the US from CO poisoning, and the Centers for Disease Control estimates that several thousand people go to hospital emergency rooms every year to be treated for CO poisoning.
The following tips, from GreenHomes America, can help ensure a safe home:
1. First, have a qualified technician perform a yearly inspection of your fuel-burning appliances and chimneys to make sure they are operating and venting correctly. The inspection should include analysis of the combustion gases and draft. Make sure to include water heating systems, generators, wood stoves and fireplaces.
2. At a minimum, install a UL-listed CO alarm in the hallway by every separate sleeping area in the home. They are inexpensive and can be had in any hardware store for $10 or less. A better approach is hardwired, interconnected CO alarms on every floor and in each bedroom.
3. NEVER attempt to adjust or service a fuel-burning appliance yourself. Always have a qualified professional do this work.
4. Burning any fuel with inadequate oxygen can lead to increased production of CO. Furnaces or water heaters without an adequate air supply can cause problems. A home performance or HVAC specialist can check for this problem, and if necessary, install a combustion air supply. A better approach is to use only sealed combustion equipment, which avoids any connection between the combustion and the air inside your home.
5. Make sure there is unobstructed space around your furnace. There should be at least a two-foot buffer around all sides. And, check that there are no combustible or volatile agents nearby (these should never be inside the house anyway).
6. If you heat with a wood stove, pellet stove or fireplace insert, make sure to use only wood or good quality wood pellets for a pellet stove; do not start the fire with agents like lighter fluid; and have proper ventilation.
7. NEVER use a gas stove, grill, camp stove, or any fuel-burning space heater indoors, even in an emergency. This is extremely dangerous. You’re better off staying elsewhere.
8. And anytime you make changes to your home, from building an addition, to adding air-conditioning, to changing your windows, you should have an expert make sure that all equipment is operating and venting properly.

Winter has officially arrived and had us waking up to a blanket of snow all over our lovely town of Mount Forest! Which means... heating season is officially here!

Is your system up and running?

We highly recommend having one of our tech's check your system at least once every 1 to 2years, minimum, to ensure it is running at its peak performance and running as efficient as possible.

There are some things that a home owner can check themselves:

Check your thermostat settings - If you have a programmable thermostat you can take advantage of programming your settings to have the heat on only when you need it. Such as taking the stat down 1-2 degrees at night for sleeping and during the day if you are not home.
Change your filter at least every 2 months, if your filter is dirty the heating system has to work harder to get the air flow and could potentially cause your equipment to fail IF it was extremely dirty.
Ensure all furniture is away from your heating and return air vents, this can restrict the flow and the furnace will have to work harder to bring up the temperature to what the thermostat is set at.

Reminders before calling in for a service call :

If we had a heavy snow - which thankfully isn't yet - if you are able to, please check your vent pipe out the side or back of your home, if this gets clogged with snow this can cause your furnace to fail.
It is beneficial if you know the make, model and age of your furnace in case any parts are needed to make the repairs.
Did you try re-setting the system - which you can do by simply turning off the thermostat and then turning back on again, sometimes this is enough to reset the system and it will start back up again.

To repair or replace, that is the question that likely comes to mind whenever your heating or cooling system stops working like it should. Although repairing may be the most affordable solution now, it might not be the best choice over the long run.

Factors to consider include:

Fifty Percent Rule

When the cost of repairs approaches 50% of the value of your heating or cooling system, it’s generally time to replace the system.

Other Rules of Thumb

Try This Fast Fall Cleanup

Crisp autumn days are the perfect time to open windows and doors and give your home a clean sweep. To clean your home faster and have more time for the things you want to do, schedule your cleaning as if you were hiring a professional cleaning service.

Set aside a Saturday morning on your calendar, and stick to it. Eliminate TV shows, email or another distractions that will waste time. Instead, crank up your favorite music or an audio book to boost your energy. If it’s still warm and humidity is still high outdoors, turn on your air conditioner’s “auto fan” setting to help you stay comfortable by reducing moisture indoors and saving energy.

If you can’t commit an entire day to cleaning your home, then decide to spend a shorter span of time cleaning the bathrooms on Saturday, dusting the living room on Sunday and so on. Finish each task before calling it quits each day so you’ll avoid having to pull out the necessary cleaning gear more than once.

Here are some other tips to help you speed clean your home:

• Clear the clutter before you start. Since you’re treating your cleaning session like you would that of a professional service, do yourself the favor of clearing countertops, floors and other surfaces of dishes, appliances, kids’ toys and clothing. You’ll move faster if you don’t have to stop to move junk out of your way. And if even the clutter seems overwhelming, picking up big items first will give you a quicker sense of accomplishment.

• Assemble all the other tools you’ll need before you start. Buy a good-quality mop, and make sure you have everything you need with you before you start – toilet brush, cleansers, cleaning cloths and trash bags at hand, and vacuum cleaner and mop waiting down the hall.

• Purchase a divided plastic tray to carry cleaning products, rather than carrying them in an apron that will weigh you down. You can streamline your tray and get by with just four cleaning products to clean your entire home:

A glass or multi-surface cleaner
Heavy-duty degreaser
Powdered abrasive cleaner
Tile cleaner
• Streamline your movements, as well as your cleaning products. Move around each room only once, and use both hands to clean. Start by standing in front of the bathroom sink. Now, spray the mirror with one hand, and wipe it with the other. Use a cloth or sponge in each hand to scrub the sink and counter. Spray and polish the fixtures before stepping away. Clean everything in front of you before moving on.

• Wipe down shower curtain liners regularly to control mold. If mold is an issue in your home, avoid using rugs in floors below ground level, where moisture can accumulate. Installing a dehumidification system helps maintain recommended moisture levels between 30% and 60% to reduce mold growth.

• Fill a plastic trash bag with clean terry and lint-free towels to carry with you for dusting, and add a second plastic bag for carrying towels after you use them. Include a large trash bag for emptying the trash, and another trash bag for items that can be given away to a thrift store. Installing a HEPA filtration system can help capture dust, dirt and pollen by completely filtering your home’s air many times a day.

• As you dust, move furniture towards the center of the room to vacuum behind it. Consider buying a 25-foot extension cord for your vacuum cleaner so you won’t have to unplug the vacuum when you move from room to room.

• Clean from the top down: That means from ceiling to floor, and top floor to the basement. You’ll avoid dripping cleanser, and dragging equipment over freshly cleaned floors. Move in one direction, left to right, through every room, cleaning window sills, picture frames and bookshelves as you come to them.

10. Reprogram your home’s thermostat for cooler weather. Using a programmable thermostat to automatically lower the temperature to 68°F in the evenings or weekends can reduce your energy bill by 10% or more.

9. Check registers or air returns to be sure they’re not blocked by draperies or furniture. Your heating system will work more effectively.

8. Vacuum your refrigerator’s condenser coils to save energy. If coils are mounted on the bottom of the unit, use a long, narrow brush to clear away dust.

7. Next time you go shopping, buy a season’s worth of furnace filters. Installing a clean filter once a month allows your furnace to work more energy efficiently.

6. Replace your five most-used, incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. The more energy-efficient CFLs burn cooler and are designed to last longer.

5. Install low-energy nightlights in hallways, the bath and kitchen. When fall’s holiday guests spend the night, they’ll stay safe without leaving wasteful lamps on.

4. If you have a fireplace, close the damper when it’s not in use. Open dampers can let in cold drafts.

3. Check your ceiling fan for a switch that will reverse the direction it spins.Running the fan clockwise on the lowest speed helps force warm air down from the ceiling.

2. Clean your home’s thermostat every few months to keep it working accurately. Remove the thermostat cover and gently dust inside with a soft cloth.

How can I clear the cobwebs?

Even though Halloween is approaching, your home doesn’t need to look like the set of a horror movie. Here’s how to be rid of the stuff that’s driving you batty.

First, break out your broom. Turn off power to your HVAC system and sweep around the outdoor unit to remove dirt, leaves and debris that can clog the condensing unit and waste energy.

After you’ve made a clean sweep outside, it’s time to clear away musty odors that can bedevil you indoors. Use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bath, and set an open box of baking soda in the kitchen to eliminate cooking odors. Avoid scented deodorizers or air fresheners that simply mask odors, as they may contain toxic chemicals.

Creaking doors? Dead houseplants? These are signs that there’s too little moisture in the air, a significant problem during the heating season. To correct humidity levels, set a heat-resistant bowl of water on a wood-burning stove, leave the bathtub filled with water for evaporation or add a whole-home humidifier to your home.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust: If there’s so much dust in your home that it appears your ancestors have come back to stay, vacuum your home’s heating vents every time you vacuum your carpet. Unscrew the grates and clean inside with a hose attachment before replacing them.

Use a dryer sheet to dust knickknacks and flat surfaces to help eliminate static that causes dust to cling. If someone in your home has allergies, consider adding a ventilation system to filter out small particles.

Finally, if you can’t escape that feeling of icy fingers up and down your spine, it may be time for a new heating system. If your HVAC system is more than 15 years old, it may be just a shadow of its former self, and it’s most certainly an energy sucker!

Smart Meters

So I came home from work the other day and found this little package simply hanging from our door knob handle. It was telling us that our Smart Meter had been installed and that at this time nothing would change.

Last evening I was reading through the package and it gave some very helpful and smart changes you can make to save energy and therefore save money!

Your electric appliances are now going to cost you more. Especially since you use most of them in the peak hours - such as your stove, hot water heater, lights and heat. It would be difficult to change to eat at either 4pm or 10pm at night. However... there are somethings you can do to help with this!

Install a Gas Stove, replace your electric hot water heater with a gas hot water heater, update your light bulbs (for that you just go to the hardware store ;) ), update your heating system. Although some of these can be quite expensive, with the Home Energy Audit you can recover some of your costs through Government Rebates!

-Check for drafts and leaks

It may not seem like a huge amount - but for something that you had to do in your home anyway - please do take advantage of this and ensure you have all of your receipts ready for your accountant at tax time!

What a winter we have been having! During these cold months when our heating system is operating all the time, we want to be sure that our system is not only operating properly and efficient but that the rest of our home is as efficient as it can be as well. Afterall if there are air leaks in your home, your heating system will be operating that much more and harder to keep up with the temperature your thermostat is set at.

A Cold and Snowy January 2010!

We hope you all had a very relaxing and fun filled Christmas season and happy new year!

The clock is ticking on getting your renovations complete if you want to take advantage the Home Owner Tax Rebate ! We hope if you are taking advantage of this you also had an energy audit completed on your home as well to receive more incentives from the government.

With all the snow we are getting, along with no heat calls, there are a few things you as a home owner can check before you call us to ensure we have all the proper information:

-Check your vents outside to ensure they are not blocked (or full) of snow
-Its good if you know the Make and Model of your heating system
-Age of your heating system
-Has the filter been changed recently?
-Is it possible the breaker went off?

Also be sure if you are going away for longer than a day or two to have someone checking your home, all it takes is for something to go wrong with your furnace (or simply the snow plug the vents and the furnace go off) and if left for too long the pipes could freeze and burst causing a lot of damage. - Better to be safe than sorry! -

So far the start to the winter isn't too bad. Unless your a cold and snow lover (unlike me). Id rather enjoy the beautiful mild weather, snow isn't bad as long as its not bitter cold! With this mild weather its good to ensure your sump pumps are working properly, especially if we get snow and then a thaw, easiest way for water to get into basements and for flooding to happen if you aren't prepared!

Have you booked your Furnace/Heating System for a Fall Clean and Service Check-over? Preventative maintenance is the best way to ensure you wont get stuck in the cold. Although there is never a guarantee something may fail, its always best to have it checked and serviced at the very minimum every 2 years.

Today is World Toilet Day, a perfect time to stop and remind ourselves what an important role plumbing – and the rest of the mechanical industry – plays in proper sanitation and health. So whether you’re in plumbing, hydronics, HVAC or refrigeration, take some time to pat yourself on the back today.

The World Toilet Organization (WTO) has declared Nov. 19 World Toilet Day, a day to raise awareness about the necessity of toilets and sanitation in developed and developing countries. According to the WTO, lack of access to proper sanitation kills 1.8 million people, mostly children, per year. In Canada, sanitation systems protect us from such vulnerability, but as a result it becomes easier to take this luxury for granted. According to the Canadian Toilet Organization, Canadians use 65 per cent of their indoor home water in the bathroom and flush one third of it down the toilet. Feel Better This Flu Season

This is a topic which is covered in the Lennox Newsletter, however with the H1N1 scare thats going around, I wanted to post this separate. Also ensure you are drinking lots of fluid, coughing into your sleeve or kleenex and getting a good nights rest.

Feel better this flu season

When it’s chilly enough to light a fire or use your furnace full-time, it’s also time for the sniffles and sneezing and coughing to start. Sealing your home air-tight to keep out cold winds can also impact your home’s air quality — and your health.

Fifty percent of illnesses are caused or made worse by poor air quality in the home, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Airborne pollutants such as mold, dust and dust mites, pet dander, bacteria and viruses trigger respiratory problems.

Excessively dry indoor air saps the moisture from your skin. Dry air also feels chillier than the actual temperature, and you’re more likely to feel tired and achy.

Here’s how you can feel better without reaching for the medicine cabinet:

Dust your home regularly with a damp cloth to avoid stirring up dust and dirt.
Keep windows slightly open during warmer days to air out your home. Installing a ventilation system keeps your home well ventilated without heat escaping through open windows.
Wash sheets once a week in hot water, and launder mattress pads, blankets and comforter covers once a month to kill dust mites.
Zap those dust mites by using hot water to wash children’s stuffed animals, or zip the toys into plastic bags and freeze overnight.
Keep bacteria at bay by cleaning out your refrigerator every month. Also, clean sink drains twice a week with an antibacterial solution.
Scrub down bathroom and kitchen fixtures regularly. Sterilize cellulose sponges by running them through the dishwasher.
An air cleaner or filtration system can capture bacteria and other small particles so you’ll breathe a little easier.

Now is the time to be calling and booking your Cleaning & Servicing for your Heating System to ensure it is ready for the Heating Season!

Fall & Winter Tips

Check your water heater for any visible leaks or corrosion. If you are able to, empty the tank and refill to help avoid lime issues, which could cause the hot water heater to not run as efficiently. Any visible leaks, corrosion or decrease in hot water supply should be checked by a professional.
Ensure all outdoor faucets are completely turned off.
Replace your furnace filter before turning your furnace on for the first time.
Have your furnace cleaned and serviced to ensure maximum performance and efficiency during the heating season.
If you have completed any renovations or have never had your ducts cleaned, it is beneficial to do so approximately every 3 years to ensure all dust, pet dander and dirt is clean from your ducts. You and your family will not only breathe better, your heating system will also!
If your heating system is over 15 years old you could benefit by upgrading to an Energy Star qualified model which would save money on your monthly energy costs.
Change your furnace filter every 3-4 months, or more during the heating season, a dirty or clogged filter will cause the furnace to work harder and could also limit the air flow through the heating ducts.
